Geomorphology of the Cook Islands, tropical South Pacific Ocean

چکیده
We use the 2021 GEBCO grid to interpret seabed geomorphology within Cook Islands and adjacent areas. A complex geological history dating back 125 Ma is manifested in a range of geoforms. These include abyssal plains, plateaux, volcanic tectonic rises, seamount-knolls chains troughs, as well fault zones. Main Map at 1:3,000,000 scale presented with example cross-sections, 1:10,000,000 inset maps bathymetry, mineral occurrences (the has major polymetallic nodule resource), feature names regional setting. expect these map products be value stakeholders interested exploration resource assessment, marine habitat management, general make-up this small island large ocean country.

Sea-level rise at tropical Pacific and Indian Ocean islands
Historical and projected sea-levels for islands in the tropical Pacific and Indian oceans are a subject of considerable interest and some controversy. The large variability (e.g. El Niño) signals and the shortness of many of the individual tide-gauge records contribute to uncertainty of historical rates of sea-level rise. Here, we determine rates of sea-level rise from tide gauges in the region...
متن کاملAphotic N2 Fixation in the Eastern Tropical South Pacific Ocean
We examined rates of N2 fixation from the surface to 2000 m depth in the Eastern Tropical South Pacific (ETSP) during El Niño (2010) and La Niña (2011). Replicated vertical profiles performed under oxygen-free conditions show that N2 fixation takes place both in euphotic and aphotic waters, with rates reaching 155 to 509 µmol N m(-2) d(-1) in 2010 and 24±14 to 118±87 µmol N m(-2) d(-1) in 2011....
متن کاملA new Emoia samoensis group lizard (Squamata: Scincidae) from the Cook Islands, South-central Pacific
The first published report of a large treeskink from Rarotonga, Cook Islands, appeared in 1988. The first museum voucher specimen was collected in 1984. Although this skink seems likely to be a recent arrival to the island of Rarotonga, it represents a unique member of the Emoia samoensis species group. We compare this population with other members of the E. samoensis group and describe the pop...
متن کاملSalinity fronts in the tropical Pacific Ocean
This study delineates the salinity fronts (SF) across the tropical Pacific, and describes their variability and regional dynamical significance using Aquarius satellite observations. From the monthly maps of the SF, we find that the SF in the tropical Pacific are (1) usually observed around the boundaries of the fresh pool under the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), (2) stronger in boreal ...
متن کاملOcean noise in the tropical and subtropical Pacific Ocean.
Ocean ambient noise is well studied in the North Pacific and North Atlantic but is poorly described for most of the worlds' oceans. Calibrated passive acoustic recordings were collected during 2009-2010 at seven locations in the central and western tropical and subtropical Pacific. Monthly and hourly mean power spectra (15-1000 Hz) were calculated in addition to their skewness, kurtosis, and pe...
